The G6 is a 155mm long-range gun developed and produced by the LIW division of Denel, mounted on a chassis made by Alvis OMC (now part of BAE Systems Land Systems). The G6 is in service with the South African Army (43 systems - GV6 Rhino) and has also been exported to the United Arab Emirates (78 systems - G6 M1A3) and Oman (24 systems).
G6-52 artillery system
Denel completed development of a new artillery system, the G6-52 in March 2003. The system is offered with the Somchem modular charge system (MCS) which can fire the Naschem M2000 Assegai system which includes the V-LAP projectile. With the V-LAP projectile, the system has a range of 67km and a rate of fire of eight rounds a minute. Multiple rounds (up to six) can be fired to simultaneously hit the same target using the ADS (Thales) AS2000 artillery target engagement system. Automated ammunition handling, fuse handling and ammunition inventory reduce crew workload. The G6-52 provides protection against nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) attacks apart from small and medium-calibre weapons.
The G6-52 turret is mounted on a Land Systems OMC 6×6 wheeled vehicle which has an off-road speed of nearly 70km/h and a range of 700km.
M109L52
Jointly developed by the Dutch firm RDM and the German firm Rheinmetall, the M109L52 was first revealed in 2002. The main improvement was replacing the M126 series gun with the longer 52-caliber cannon from the PzH 2000, thus the MTLS ammunition of the PzH 2000 can be used. In addition, improvements to the loading system were made. This resulted in an increase of the rate of fire to 9–10 rds/min from the original 3 rds/min, and this high rate of fire can be sustained for up to 2 minutes. A total of 35 rounds can be carried.
Big gun: The entire retrofits main feature is a new 52 calibre cannon. The 8.06-metre-long, 60-groove barrel with a chamber volume of 23 litres shares extensive ballistic commonality with the PzH-2000 howitzer and thus is compatible with the same firing table. The 52 calibre cannon is available with an almost new developed rotating revolving or a wedge type breech. The new ordnance can be fired with modern modular propellant charge systems, including a full range of RWMs developed generation of artillery ammunition such as DM111 (for ranges up to 30.3 km), the DM 642 family (up to 27.1 km) and the DM 652 family (up to 34.5 km) as well as the RH 40 Base-Bleed round (up to 40 km), the new MS-smoke shell DM125 (up to 27.1 km) and the sensor-fused DM702 SMArt 155. The latter will be able to destroy semi-hard and hard targets responsively and precisely under all weather and operational conditions. Because SMArt is so effective, it will reduce the logistical burden as compared to conventional munitions. With its ability to attack targets precisely, it will minimize collateral damage.
